Chelsea Villegas
Rooted in a deep reverence for nature and a childhood spent immersed in creativity, my work is a testament to resilience, transformation, and the quiet beauty of everyday life. I grew up surrounded by art, music, and the wonders of the natural world—early experiences that shaped my creative path and planted the seeds for a lifelong artistic journey. I studied painting at the University of Delaware and I am self taught in the encaustic medium. Though I paused my practice to embrace motherhood, homeschooling, and the demands of early family life, the call to create never left me.
After navigating a profound personal loss and rebuilding, I returned to my studio with renewed purpose. My encaustic paintings, rich with texture, symbolism, and light, explore themes of connection, memory, and renewal. Each piece is both a personal offering and an invitation—an attempt to hold space for the beauty that can emerge through even the most challenging seasons of life.
Artist Statement
I create compelling, one-of-a-kind paintings that merge the timeless allure of encaustic techniques with mixed media My artistic style is defined by a delicate balance between abstraction and emotion, where layers of texture, color, and form invite the viewer to explore both the seen and the unseen.
Encaustic is a centuries-old medium of hot wax fused with pigments which I blend seamlessly with other materials such as oil paint, pastels, drawings, gouache, gold leaf, and vintage fabrics, to create pieces that feel tactile, alive, and dimensional. Each piece is an intricate interplay of materials—organic textures juxtaposed with clean lines and imagery, vibrant hues softened by earthy tones—crafted to evoke both wonder and introspection.
My work is deeply rooted in themes of transformation, connection, and the passage of time. I draw inspiration from nature’s ability to evolve, heal, and renew, as well as from personal experiences and emotions. This influence allows my art to serve as a visual language—a bridge between the external world and the internal journey.
